The Mill Pond

Rain and water flowing at the Mill Pond Dam

The Mill Pond in Dorchester, where this project took place, is embedded in a history that intertwines industrial ambition with the Thames Valley preservation efforts. The Mill Pond Committee describes the pond and the areas aroun it as a “historical landmark and a community focus for recreation and education.”

The pond, which was maintained around a dam constructed to power a sawmill, is a reminder of our inheritance of economic growth and transformation over time. As agricultural and industrial activities declined in the region, the structures built to serve industry were gradually reclaimed for other purposes. As part of an “Eco-Trail” the pond currently gathers dragonflies among other creatures in its santuary.

Today, ongoing development around the pond reflects the complex interplay between human progress and environmental preservation. It is within this dynamic landscape—rich with cultural and ecological significance—that our project found its grounding.
